International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

Beginning in 1993, the General Assembly of the United Nations decided to hold an annual International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. Every year on October 17, the nations of the world pay tribute to those living in extreme poverty. This yearly emphasis serves as a reminder of the large goal the United Nations and the people of the world want to achieve—the goal of completely ridding the world of poverty.

The ceremonies on this day usually include stories, essays, and songs by young people, as well as speeches and a panel discussion on some aspect of poverty. The goal of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is a greater awareness of the misery poverty causes, how it steals from people their basic freedoms and human rights, and how it must not be tolerated.
